National Orienteering Day at the Double Ogg Dare

September 22, 2012
Shawnee Mission Park

We had a beautiful day at Shawnee Mission Park for National Orienteering Day, Sep 22, 2012.  About 75 newcomers tried the 15-control demonstration course set out by Nick Hockman.  Everyone who checked back in after finding a few of the controls was able to select a raffle ticket which awarded items from the Backwoods Grab Bag, or $2.00-off coupons for PTOC events, or a free day of orienteering at any OUSA club.  The grab bag was generously donated by Backwoods outdoor equipment at 135th and Metcalf in Overland Park.

The main event was the Double Ogg Dare Festival which was a fundraiser for the refurbishing of Oak Ridge Lodge, a recent acquisition of Shawnee Mission Park.  There were many other family-centered activities in addition to the Orienteering Challenge, such as the Konza Swamp band, trail runs, mountain bike rides, disc golf, and food concessions.  It was great fun…plan to attend next year’s event.

Thank you to Nick Hockman, Pat Slusher, Nancy Neuburger, Angie Barrett, Paul Clatterbuck, Dick Luckerman, and Reta Roe for all of your help.
