PTOC Summer Sprint #6
Johnson County Community College
July 18, 2009
Submitted by Paul Clatterbuck

A perfect day for Orienteering, clear skies, cool temperatures and low humidity.   There were a total of 21 starts at Johnson County Community College.  The exceptionally cool weather probably brought out more participants.  All seemed to have a good time running through the campus.

The course was 2.9 km long with numerous route choices among the buildings and outside art objects.  Mike Eglinski was first, followed by Joe Barrett, Gene Wee, Fritz Menninger and Matt Barrett.  I will put the shortest route on route gadget based on my GPS tracking.   The lengths of routes for the following were within 10 meters of each other.  3 to 4, 8 to 9, 9 to 10, 10 to 11, 11 to 12.  Also, contrary to what I told some of you, after checking my Data, the route to the right (north)  on 7 to 8 is closer as shown on route gadget.

Following the race, each participant was given an opportunity to show how observant they were throughout the race, by identifying the location of 10 outside sculptures on the JCCC campus.  5 Sculptures were at controls and 5 along the shortest route between controls.  Obviously, most people concentrated on the race and not the Art.  Mike Eglinski identified all 10 correctly.  Nancy Neuburger was a close runner up with 9 correct.  The next most correct was 6 by the Twilight Team.

Thanks to Reta Roe for registration, and Dick Neuburger for set up.  Also, thanks to Rita, Matt B., Dick, and Fritz M. for control pickup.
