Helpful Hints to Orienteer on Your Own

Best practices for UsynligO app:

    1. On your phone, set the app to track your location “always”. You can turn it back to “never” after you finish the course. This allows it to continue to track you even if your phone goes to sleep.
    2. In the app, go to setting and set:
      1. Control radius = 35 meters
      2. Min GPS Accuracy = 100 meters
    3. The app plays three sounds:
      1. One when you find a control (a chord of sounds)
      2. A different one when you pass a control but not the right one (for instance, you are going from #1 to #2 but you pass by #14) (this is a single note, doot-doot-doot)
      3. A triumphant trumpet sound when you finish
    4. You have to start at the triangle (start symbol) on the map. (Look backwards from the circle labeled 1)
    5. The app still misses some control locations. You can bypass this by going into settings (once you start the course) and switch to the “score” option. This will give you credit for every marker you find, and ignore any that you pass but the app doesn’t record.
      1. This is also a good setting if you don’t want to do a whole course, or want to go in a different order.
    6. Once you press “start” there is a five-second countdown.
      1. Use this to check your phone volume, make sure you can hear the sounds.
      2. If you need more time to put away your phone, etc. you can stand away from the start, then press “start”. It will give an option box, one of which is “automatic start”. If you choose this, the app will automatically start when you cross the start triangle.
    7. The app offers navigation assistance. You can use this function, or not. It’s fine to put the phone away and only use the app for tracking or sounds (in the background).
